Celebrating Summer
As summer winds down and many of our AJSA junior members prepare to head back to school, I find myself reflecting on a season filled with Simmental cattle, Simmental kids, and Simmental memories.
Our summer kicked off in June as juniors traveled east to Lebanon, Indiana, for the Eastern Regional and west to Filer, Idaho, for the Western Regional. Each year, these regional shows provide AJSA members with opportunities to compete, learn, and connect while enjoying the hospitality of state associations and volunteers.
Regional shows have always been some of my favorite stops on the summer schedule. While the pace is a little slower than the whirlwind of National Classic season, every event offers something unique. Working alongside different state associations and show coordinators keeps each year different and exciting. For exhibitors, the regional shows provide a more relaxed setting to fine-tune contest skills and showcase their cattle. They’re also a chance to experience the hospitality of each host state and enjoy what makes every region unique.
As June faded into July, 525 AJSA members and their families made their way to Grand Island, Nebraska, for the National Classic. The future of our breed is certainly bright, with more than 850 head of cattle checked in and the largest junior division ever at a National Classic.
The National Classic is a week packed with educational contests and cattle shows, but more importantly, it’s a week built on friendships, memories, and personal growth. Lifelong friendships are formed, meaningful connections are made, and opportunities to learn and grow are endless.
This year’s National Classic theme was “Dream On,” and for many families, it truly was a dream come true. Some exhibitors achieved personal goals in the show or showmanship ring. Others had the opportunity to ring that coveted bell one more time. And for many, the greatest dream of all was simply spending a week surrounded by friends they only get to see once each year. Those moments are what make the AJSA experience so special and create memories that last long after the trailers head home.
Looking ahead to next summer, our travel schedule is already filling up. Regional shows will keep us busy throughout June, with shows already being planned in Pennsylvania and South Dakota, along with additional locations still to be announced. The National Classic will travel to Louisville, Kentucky, July 17–23, 2027.
As summer turns to fall and my focus shifts to PTP shows and planning for next year, I can’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity the ASA has given me to help AJSA members and their families pursue their dreams while creating summers they will remember for a lifetime.
